I Saw 10 Minutes Of Alien: Covenant And It Was Brutal, Gory, And Beautiful *SPOILERS*

I celebrated Alien Day all day today, and finished off the "holiday" by attending one of the Regal Alien Day screenings of Ridley Scott's original classic Alien. For attending, we got a commemorative ticket, and before the movie started Scott himself told us to stick around for a special sneak peak of the upcoming Alien: Covenant. The original film still plays so well now after all these years, and with every viewing it solidifies itself as one of my favorite films of all-time. After the credits rolled, the screen went black, and we were off.

The footage started with the prologue released online earlier in the day, titled The Crossing. In it, David (MichaelFassbender) and Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) are onboard the Engineers ship from the end of Prometheus and are heading to their homeworld. Here, watch it now, I will wait…

After that, we got some new footage. The first scene was the crew, including Daniels (Katherine Waterson), Walter (Fassbender, playing dual roles), Christopher Oram (Billy Crudup), Karine Oram (Carmen Ejogo), and Tennesse (Danny McBride) flying their ship down to the surface of a familiar planet, and showing us some of the interplay between the lot of them. McBride shines in this scene, being subtle with his humor, and we get some gorgeous shots of the ship as it lands and the scene faded to black…

Which led to the other, much longer scene was the one that impressed and grossed out. We then cut to some of the crew rushing back to the ship, dragging along two of the crew members who seem to be infected with something. As viewers who have seen Alien films before, we know where this is going. Pilot Feris (Amy Seimetz), Karine, and their male crew member drag him vomiting and convulsing into the medical bay, where his skin starts to break. Feris runs out of the medical bay and and locks Karine and the dying crew member in there, while she contacts Christoper over coms in hysterics. They are dragging another member infected with them. Cut back to the medical bay, and…well…a Xenomorph bursts through his back while his insides spill out of the giant hole in his back. The Xenomorph has a different look this time, and is white. It is PISSED. It sees Karine across the room and begins to attack her, as Feris gets back to the room with a gun and starts firing away. Karine is killed, and the Xenomorph starts chasing and then attacking Feris in the cargohold of the ship. As we cut to the other group, they see the ship suddenly explode into flames, as Feris has shot a canister that causes the explosion. Christopher falls to his knees and cries out, while Daniels and the rest watch in horror as a second white Xenomorph bursts forth from the mouth of the other infected crew member, and runs off into the wild as the scene fades to black.

This scene was BRUTAL. This is Ridley Scott with the gloves off and not pulling any punches whatsoever, the Xenomorph births are quite frankly disgusting and gross to witness, as entrails and organs pour out of the bodies of the infected crew members and blood is everywhere. So much blood in fact, that Feris, Karine and even the Xenomorph slip and fall on it in the medical bay. These Neomorphs as they have been named start off small and angry, but by the time the scene was over they were evolving and growing a an alarming rate.  I was a little shocked that they showed us this, as it not only seems to be the first glance of a Xenomorph in the film, but featured many characters death scenes. Feris gets it the worst, at least without birthing an Alien, as after the ships blows up you see her stumble out of the ship completely engulfed in flames and fall over. The brutality of all this was unnerving and made me squirm in my seat, and that is exactly what I wanted from this film, so I could not be more excited. One thing I will say though: after seeing the iconic chestbursting scene in the original right before this, it really made me wish they used practical effects for this, the Xenomorph is effective, but looks like CGI. The original feels so vivid and real, it took me out of it for a second initially.

This film is going to be the most visceral and brutal Alien film we may ever see, and I for one could not be more excited. May 19 cannot come soon enough.
