Scream 7 Director Departs Film: "Dream Job" Turned Into "Nightmare"

Scream 7 director Christopher Landon is no longer helming the film - noting that it had become "a dream job that turned into a nightmare."

Article Summary

  • Christopher Landon exits as director of Scream 7, citing a nightmarish experience.
  • Melissa Barrera cut from film over controversial social media posts.
  • Jenna Ortega leaves Scream 7 reportedly due to scheduling conflicts with Wednesday Season 2.
  • Barrera responds to controversy, denouncing hate and affirming her advocacy for rights.

The cuts that Spyglass Media is suffering over Scream 7 keep getting deeper and deeper. First, the news came down that Melissa Barrera (Sam Carpenter) was cut from the next chapter in the horror franchise after the studio claimed that social media posts from Barrera regarding the Israel/Palestine/Hamas conflict crossed their "zero tolerance" policy against "antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech." Following that, we learned that Barrera's co-star, Jenna Ortega had officially left the project (reportedly due to scheduling conflicts with Netflix's Wednesday Season 2 and not Barrera's termination). Now, director Christopher Landon has confirmed that he is no longer helming the film – noting that he "formally exited" seven weeks ago and that "a dream job that turned into a nightmare."

"I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited 'Scream 7' weeks ago," Landon shared. "This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it's time to move on. I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes' legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing, and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow."

Not long after the news broke, Barrera spoke out for the first time, sharing a response message on Instagram stories. "First and foremost, I condemn Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. I condemn hate and prejudice of any kind against any group of people," Barrera wrote in the opening to her message. Here's a look:

First and foremost I condemn Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. I condemn hate and prejudice of any kind against any group of people.

As a Latina, a proud Mexicana, I feel the responsibility of having a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard, and therefore I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and to lend my voice to those in need.

Every person on this earth- regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or socio-economic status- deserves equal human rights, dignity and, of course, freedom.

I believe a group of people are NOT their leadership, and that no governing body should be above criticism. I pray day and night for no more deaths, for no more violence, and for peaceful co-existence. I will continue to speak out for those that need it most and continue to advocate for peace and safety, for human rights and freedom.

Silence is not an option for me.
