[SPOILERS] The Future of the Skrulls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
A new alien race made it to the Marvel universe over the weekend as we finally met the Skrulls in Captain Marvel. The Skrulls have a long history in the comics of being the bad guys and were involved in one of the major crossover events called Secret Invasion. Now that the Skrulls are in the Marvel universe we have to wonder how they are going to be used in the future. However, that is a rather large spoiler when it comes to the plot of Captain Marvel. So consider this your spoiler warning if you don't want a huge plot point of Captain Marvel spoiled for you.

In Captain Marvel we learn that the Skrulls are actually the good guys or at least not the bad guys. Talos reveals to Carol that the Skrulls aren't invading anyone but living as refugees because the Kree destroyed their homeworld when they refused Kree rule. It turns the entire conflict on its head and answers the question many of us had when it came to the Kree-Skrull war; there usually isn't anyone worth rooting for and now there is.
So what does that mean for Secret Invasion? Well, as it turns out, the plot point in Captain Marvel doesn't mean it won't happen. Kevin Feige explained to ComicBook.com about how the Marvel Cinematic Universe could still do a version of Secret Invasion.
"Just like not all humans are bad, and not all humans are good, I think Skrulls probably have a variety of moralities amongst them," Feige told ComicBook.com. "When they can do what they can do, it probably gets very tempting. So, it's fun to have introduced this concept and see where it goes."
Captain Marvel showed us a new era of the MCU but there are still years between when Carol leaves Earth and when we return for Avengers: Endgame. Feige went on to say that there are plenty of storytelling opportunities in those decades.
"As we saw in the tag, she's with us now in the present day," Feige said. "But those intervening years between her soaring off with Talos and answering Fury's call, we think is ripe with potential for storytelling."
The idea that "all Skrulls are bad" is a very black and white way of looking at the world. While that kind of thinking works well in comic books the MCU has shown that it tries to have a little more nuance than that. So, we shouldn't be surprised to see the Skrulls turn up in one capacity or another in the future.
Summary: Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.
Captain Marvel, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, will also star Brie Larson, Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Samuel L. Jackson. The film is set for release on March 8th, 2019.
