Square Enix Opens Up About Rise Of The Tomb Raider Xbox Timed Exclusivity
One of the big news stories of last year was that Rise of the Tomb Raider was going to be an exclusive to Xbox One this holiday period. We, as expected, found out that it was a timed exclusive recently, but that it would only come to PlayStation 4 a full year after its debut on Xbox One.
Now that that has been revealed, publisher Square Enix were out talking about the decision to go exclusive to Microsoft in the first place with the Examiner. The company's Western CEO Phil Rogers sympathised with fans, but went on to explain:
I hope fans know that it wasn't an easy decision. I think any sort of partnership at this level is a decision that took a longtime for us to get to. The decision at a studio level, we took very, very seriously. We knew it would, in the short-term, disappoint fans.
He later continued:
It becomes the most important thing. We're about growing our IP, this is a long-term decision. We're going to take Tomb Raider up to the next level. With Microsoft's belief, passion and sort of muscle to help us deliver, we really think this is going to be an awesome game that people will enjoy for years and years to come.
This was obviously a huge decision and it has certainly alienated a lot of fans who thought of Lara Croft as a PlayStation icon. We will have to see if this works out in the "long-term" but I worry that by the time this hits PlayStation 4, the desire for this game may be near non-existent. We will have to see how this shakes out.
