This Is Your Hero On Red Kryptonite…
Green Kryptonite was created to give Superman a weakness because writer's had been increasing his powers over the years to a point where nothing could really hurt him. Red Kryptonite on the other hand was created so writer's could make Superman act less like the Big Blue Boy Scout for an issue or two. Smallville used Red Kryptonite a few times to let Tom Welling play darker after seasons of being the aw-shucks Clark Kent. I think it was Andrew Kreisberg who said the key to making shows like Arrow and The Flash successful was to not hold anything back for season 2. Hence this week we get Supergirl on Red Kryptonite.
But in the comics Red Kryptonite affected Superman differently every time he was exposed to it. Often splitting him into three or changing him physically. The Lois & Clark series used it once to make Superman apathetic and another time to transfer his powers to Lois Lane. So it is interesting that the Supergirl series is using it the same way Smallville did.
Supergirl airs Mondays at 8 PM on CBS.
