Tomb Raider Reboot Is Now The Best Selling In The Series
Tomb Raider hit in 2013 to a pretty significant splash. The game was a big critical darling as new life was breathed into a stale franchise. Unfortunately, Square Enix didn't see it the same way. When it was announced that the game had 'only' sold 3.6 million units, it was deemed a failure by its publisher.
That could well have changed now. Gamespot are reporting that, including numbers for the new-gen re-release, the title has now sold 8.5 million copies over its lifetime. That makes it the highest selling in the franchise's long history.
In a statement developer Crystal Dynamics' studio head Darrell Gallagher said:
Tomb Raider ignited and expanded the fan base, pushing the series to a new level. The game's incredible sales success reflects the passionate response of players.
Supposedly Rise of the Tomb Raider is coming to us this fall on Xbox One and Xbox 360, so we will see how Crystal Dynamic build on their success. I absolutely believe that will prove to be the case.
