Ward Won't Return On 'Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.'
The third plot line for the fourth season of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. this season saw a lot of old faces return. As the team was put into the "framework" a Matrix type alternate reality where characters such as Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), Tripp (B.J. Britt) and others made appearances despite being very dead. When it was revealed that Aida was building a body that could make her human in the real world fans began to wonder if they were going to use the same machine to bring some of those characters back to life.
Spoiler Room on Entertainment Weekly had the same question brought up and it doesn't look good for fans of Grant Ward.
EP Jed Whedon says they considered bringing others besides Aida back, but due to a litany of reasons — "scheduling, or personal issues, or other shows that take our people away," Whedon says — it just didn't work out. Plus: Anyone who came back in that way probably wouldn't have been long for this world. "Aida rebuilt her body out of dark stuff from a dark, terrible universe, so she wasn't exactly human," EP Jeff Bell explains. "There was a Darkhold filter through which she came, so it seemed that anyone who came back that way was not, in fact, really themselves, but some corrupted version of themselves.
Now this is a comic book world where anything can happen and it wouldn't be the first time someone has come back to life. That being said it sounds like the various actors that played Ward and Tripp have moved on and it's time for the show to do the same thing. They had the perfect opportunity and they decided not to take it. The final reveal of the show teases a very different direction for the Agents so bringing back to the dead isn't going to be high on the list.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 premieres January 2018 on ABC.
