Watch: Star Wars Holiday Special, Thank the Maker Special Edition
If Bea Arthur and Life Day celebrations are your thing, look no further than the much maligned Star Wars Holiday Special. Not good by any stretch of the imagination, this holiday special continues to be spoken about by Star Wars fans of all ages. Some grew up with this… interesting film, while some have only recently discovered it thanks to the wonders of the internet.
Originally released in 1978, the Star Wars Holiday Special was directed by Steve Binder and revolves around Han and Chewie returning to the Wookie home world of Kashyyyk to celebrate Life Day. Pretty much all the original cast returns for the flick: Mark Hamill as Luke, Carrie Fisher as Leia (she sings the 'Star Wars Theme', guys), Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca, Anthony Daniels as C-3Po, Alec Guinness as Obi Wan Kenobi, James Earl Jones as the voice of Darth Vader, and David Prowse (through archival footage) as Darth Vader's physical self.
The big thing about the Star Wars Holiday Special is who it introduces ahead of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, namely everyone's favorite bounty hunter, Boba Fett. In a cartoon produced by Nelvana, the Mandalorian is officially brought into the saga. Don Francks voices him.
YouTuber Thank the Maker has put up their edit of the special, with some restored footage and subtitles, with the assurance that "this version of the Holiday Special you can sit through without having to get wasted." A bold claim; we don't know where they get their delusions of grandeur, but see for yourself:
