The Wizard Of Oz Universe Is Getting Another Grim And Gritty Reboot
The world of Frank L. Baum's Wonderful Wizard of Oz novels immortalized by the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz is finally getting a modern update. According to a report from spice-of-life themed movie blog Variety, New Line Cinema is planning a grim and gritty reboot of Oz in an upcoming film based on a script titled Hammerspace written by Mike Van Waes, part of a project called "The Black List" which highlights Hollywood's top unproduced scripts. The project, which is being called a horror movie, is described thusly:
A terminally-ill teenager looking for answers about his missing father finds a key that unlocks an opening to an alternate animated dimension and a new friend who helps him repair his broken family.
It's unclear at this time why there is such a huge demand for grim and gritty reboots of popular properties, but Hollywood keeps doing them, so we have to assume that people want this. In particular, The Wizard of Oz seems to be a hot subject for grim and gritty rebooting, as NBC just finished airing the first season of a "dark and edgy" Wizard of Oz reboot called Emerald City.
Hammerspace currently has no producer or anyone else attached. What is Frank Miller up to lately?
