'Game of Thrones' Season 7: Stormborn Pics Show Jon, Littlefinger Tension
Coming off of Game of Thrones' largest season premiere ratings in the show's history, HBO has released several new images from the second episode of Season 7, Stormborn, ahead of this Sunday's broadcast. While the premiere appeared more concerned with getting viewers reacquainted with the series and setting the season's storylines in-motion, if these images tell us anything it's that war is coming and tensions are starting to rise.
Based on what we've just seen, some takeaways that we can gather from Stormborn include: Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) continues her quest for Westeros with Tyrion (Peter Dinklage), Elaria Sand (Indira Varma), and Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbæk) offering perspective; Jon (Kit Harrington) and Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) beginning to be at-odds with one another; Jon and Davos (Liam Cunningham) heading out of Winterfell; Arya (Maisie Williams) continuing on her journey; Sansa (Sophie Turner) with a look of suspicious determination, and Sam (John Bradley) continuing his work at the Citadel with the archmaester Ebrose (Jim Broadbent).
Game of Thrones saw a seventh season premiere that blew past expectations: Entertainment Weekly reported that Dragonstone scored 16.1 million viewers across all of HBO's platforms (HBO GO, HBO On-Demand, etc.) That would make it not only the show's biggest ratings number to date, but also a 50% jump from the sixth season premiere's 10.7 million viewers.
Here's what HBO has to say about Game of Thrones Season 7:
"Daenerys Targaryen has finally set sail for Westeros with her armies, dragons and new Hand of the Queen, Tyrion Lannister. Jon Snow has been named King in the North after defeating Ramsay Bolton in the Battle of the Bastards and returning Winterfell to House Stark. In King's Landing, Cersei Lannister has seized the Iron Throne by incinerating the High Sparrow, his followers and her rivals in the Sept of Baelor. But as old alliances fracture and new ones emerge, an army of dead men marches on the Wall, threatening to end the game of thrones forever."
A number of characters are expected to return for (though not necessarily survive) Game of Thrones' upcoming season, including: Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Gillen (Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish), Harington (Jon Snow), Diana Rigg (Lady Olenna Tyrell), Turner (Sansa Stark), Williams (Arya Stark), Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy), Bradley (Samwell Tarly), Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth), Cunningham (Davos Seaworth), Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei), Jerome Flynn (Bronn), Iain Glen (Jorah Mormont), Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark), Conleth Hill (Varys), Kristofer Hivju (Tormund Giantsbane), Hannah Murray (Gilly), Carice van Houten (Melisandre), Varma (Ellaria Sand), Asbaek (Euron Greyjoy), Rory McCann (Sandor "The Hound" Clegane) and Richard Dormer (Beric Dondarrion). New cast members include: Broadbent, Tom Hopper, Megan Parkinson and Ed Sheeran.
Game of Thrones is executive-produced by David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Carolyn Strauss, Frank Doelger and Bernadette Caulfield; and co-executive produced by Bryan Cogman, Guymon Casady, Vince Gerardis and George R.R. Martin.
