Busting Ghosts With Mission Impossible's Ethan Hunt In Our LEGO: Dimensions Demo
By Mike Rohrssen
After a vastly successful first couple of waves of characters, Lego Dimensions is back with new characters, new stories, and many new ways to play!
I was able to get a hands-on demo of the new waves from Lego Dimensions both from the new Ghostbusters story line, based on the 2016 movie, and a brand new multiplayer battle mode called Capture the Flag. The Ghostbusters level pack comes complete with an interactive minifig of Abby Yates, Melissa McCarthy's character in the movie, and a Lego kit to build the Ghostbusters headquarters from the movie. Unlike the Ghostbusters level kit from the launch wave, featuring the classic Ghostbusters from the 80s, this set allows you to control all four of the new Ghostbusters all through the story mode. And of course, you can use any other of the new Lego characters as well. I personally picked Harry Potter and Mission Impossible's Ethan Hunt to join my Ghostbusters crew. The new story mode also introduces you to a new "Rip module" that allows all the characters to cross into parallel dimensions to change the surroundings in the current timeline.
The multiplayer mode, is a far different experience. It's set in Pillow Land from Adventure Time with four differently colored bases, each with a flag and many different traps and defenses for players to use. Another character they had for the demo was Finn the Human, so I had to try him. A little guy and I were matched up on the same team to defend our flag against two computer characters, and the randomly chosen ones were Gizmo and Stripe from the Gremlins movie franchise. The battle mode is fraught with perils to attack friends and enemies alike, very similar to the old school battle mode from Mario Kart 64. The overall gameplay is the nerdy fun you'd expect from Lego, the power-ups include everything from random daggers falling from the sky, to "Treacle Feet" from the Harry Potter franchise that slows your character down.
If you've never experience Lego Dimensions before, these new sets are a great way to jump into the gameplay, especially if you are a fan of the new Ghostbusters movie, or are excited for the upcoming Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them. If you are already invested in Lego Dimensions, then prepare to invest in a lot more awesome gameplay.
