Exclusive Winnie the Pooh Collectors Platter Hits Auction Today

Winnie the Pooh has warmed the hearts of readers and viewers alike for ages. The original book series created by A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard shows a more realistic and nostalgic style of art for the stuffed animal cast while the cartoon shows a highly rendered version with pop sensibilities. Both versions have become iconic, and Bleeding Cool's coverage of Heritage Auctions' Winnie the Pooh pieces have even brought to light some licensor art directional guides that companies would use when creating merchandise for either style. Today, Heritage Auctions has an incredible Pooh piece that may be the most unique item from this franchise that we've shown so far.

Peter Ellenshaw – "Summer Grand Afternoon" Pooh Seasons Goebel Collectors Platter (Walt Disney, 1996).

A rare collectors platter from the world-renowned creator of glass and porcelain artifacts, Goebel. The 14" x 12" platter was created using original Winnie the Pooh artwork by Disney's famed matte painter Peter Ellenshaw (1913 – 2007). Ellenshaw has received numerous awards from many prestigious institutions. Among them the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the American Film Institute in Chicago.

Heritage Auctions continues their listing, describing Peter Ellenshaw's credits and honors that certainly make this Pooh Bear platter even more special. They write:

With well over 50 films to his credit including The Thief of Bagdad (1940), Treasure Island (1950), Spartacus (1960), The Love Bug (1968), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1968), The Black Hole (1979), and Dick Tracy (1990), Peter would receive five Academy Award nominations, taking home the coveted OSCAR® for his brilliant recreation of Edwardian London in Walt Disney's, Mary Poppins (1964). In 1993 Ellenshaw was inducted into Disney's hall of fame program as an official Disney Legend. In 2017 Peter Ellenshaw was posthumously inducted in the Visual Effects Society's hall of fame. He also has the distinction of having his name appear in a window on Main Street in Disneyland an honor bestowed upon only a few who help create the magic.

Heritage Auctions notes that this listing from the Ellenshaw Family Archives comes in the original box and includes a Goebel certificate of quality. The platter up for auction is hand-signed by Peter Ellenshaw and is noted to be in excellent condition.
