Bob's Burgers Season 12 Episode 1 Review: Gendered Expectations Begone
Linda tells a story that gets more horrific as time goes on while Millie traps Louise in a hellish fairy nightmare in Bob's Burgers season 12 premiere. FOX aired the first episode of season 12, "Manic Pixie Crap Show" this past weekend so just in case you haven't seen it yet? Beware! Major spoilers are plentiful going forward.
This episode was a great exploration of Louise's character & did an honest dive into the conflicting moments that gendered expectations can have on us all. While Louise may not enjoy the pixie event like Millie or others her age do, in the end, she understands that it's ok. Initially, she said something that really spoke to me, "Am I not being a girl right or something?". Her fear of her own difference, liking the Burobu cards ( which are amazing and I now want that "The Slug-itive" one) and such are what make her her own person. The plot conveyed an excellent point, that equality comes with choice. Bob's Burgers showed audiences that true joy comes in letting people enjoy things regardless of what they signal in regards to the feminine or masculine.
There was a profound depth to this episode of Bob's Burgers that helped set up what I hope will be an excellent twelfth season. Tina says it best when talking to Louise, "Everyone can just like what they like and be who they are, and that's okay". On the other side of things, Linda has to deal with acknowledging a small but important memory of the death of a beloved neighborhood dog, Bottle Cap. It was an excellent reminder of Mort's great character presence as he helps Bob understand that Linda hasn't processed her grief yet. I had a lot of fun watching this episode, with the great blend of classic Bob's Burgers humor and character interactions. And I would be remiss if I didn't give special mention of the Bob's Burgers S12E01 Store & Van Names: "You've Lost That Oven Feeling: Kitchen Appliance Repair," "Bug Store Cowboy," and "More Flower To Ya."
