Dustin Rhodes Puts Career on Line Against Kip Sabian on AEW Dynamite
Wrestling legend Dustin Rhodes says he will retire if he fails to defeat Kip Sabian in the TNT Championship tournament on next week's episode of AEW Dynamite. Rhodes revealed the news on a voicemail left for his brother and AEW Vice President Cody Rhodes. AEW shared a video of Cody listening to the voicemail, looking concerned, on Twitter.
"Hey man, it's your big brother here. I want to run a couple things by you," Dustin says on the voicemail. "As you know, I soul search every single f***ing week, right? I'm always asking the question: can I still do this? So my soul searching has led me to this. This TNT tournament the most important thing I've done since wrestling you at Double or Nothing. Hands down. To be the first TNT champion means every fricking thing you can possibly imagine to me. So one of the things I really want to discuss with you, and I really would like to talk to you instead of texting you or voicemailing you this. Look, this guy Kip Sabian is no joke. If I cannot beat that son of a bitch, I will retire. So give me a call back, will you man? See you later buddy. I love you."
Dustin Rhodes has a Long Road Ahead
Though Dustin Rhodes has clearly drawn a line in the sand over the TNT Championship tournament, he still has a long way to go. Even if he does defeat Kip Sabian this week, he'll need to face Lance Archer in the semifinal matchup. Archer doesn't see a victory for Rhodes as likely there, tweeting, "You should retire @dustinrhodes because if you beat @TheKipSabian (which he shouldn't want to win and have to face me) Then I'll end you in a way that will be considered 'cruel and unusual' NO ONE in @AEWrestling is ready!" And if Rhodes does defeat Archer, then he'll need to face the winner of the semifinal match between his own brother Cody and either Darby Allin or Sammy Guevarra.
Making matters more difficult, Rhodes will have to contend with not only Sabian, but Penelope Ford as well, who will be in Sabian's corner. Luckily, Rhodes has his brother's wife and AEW executive Brandi Rhodes in his corner. Brandi tweeted, "I think you still have it in you @dustinrhodes. You're in the best shape of your life. Yes @TheKipSabian is a top contender. Yes @thePenelopeFord is crafty. But I'm in your corner Chicken. I'm not letting you go down without the fight of your life. Let's go!" AEW Dynamite airs on Wednesdays at 8PM Eastern on TNT, and we'll see it it will be Dustin Rhodes' final match.
