Marvel Studios Exec: Netflix's Daredevil Part of MCU Sacred Timeline
Brad Winderbaum, Head of Marvel Studios' Streaming, Television and Animation, explains why Netflix's Daredevil is a part of the MCU timeline.
With new showrunner Dario Scardapane (Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, The Punisher) in place and the co-directing team of Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead (Loki) aboard to helm the remainder of the season, expectations are high for Marvel Studios & Disney+'s Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock/Daredevil), Vincent D'Onofrio (Wilson Fisk/Kingpin) & Jon Bernthal (Frank Castle/Punisher)-starring Daredevil: Born Again. While the project will properly give the characters their own series once again, Cox & D'Onofrio have already made their presence known in the MCU – and they're about to again in the Alaqua Cox-starring Echo (hitting Disney+ next week). But there's one question surrounding all of this that's never received a proper answer. Sure, there's the old "multiverse" response, meaning that pretty much everything & anything can happen in the MCU. But fans are looking for confirmation that Netflix's Daredevil is now part of the main central timeline/universe – that "sacred" one. As far as Brad Winderbaum, Head of Streaming, Television and Animation at Marvel Studios, sees it… it is.
"I can say that up until this point, we've been a little bit cagey about what's Sacred Timeline, what's not Sacred Timeline. That was born of, frankly, a period at the studio where we were like, 'We have to stick the landing with the vendors.' It was another part of the company developing the Netflix stuff. We were aware of what they were doing, they were aware of what we were doing, but there was a lot to balance anyway," Winderbaum shared with ScreenRant. "But now that some time has passed, now that we see actually how well integrated the stories are, I think that I personally, Brad Winderbaum, would be confident in saying it is part of the Sacred Timeline." We have a feeling that Winderbaum may have answered one question – and opened the door to two dozen more. Here's a look at a clip from the interview:
Daredevil: Born Again Directors on How It's "Day Zero" For Them
"We have the best answer for you. So you see this space we're in right now? This is our office, and we just found out we have an office about 45 minutes ago. And that's what we're at with Daredevil," Benson joked during an interview with The Wrap when asked about taking over the streaming series. But on a serious note, Moorhead shared that they're currently doing some serious research on a number of levels. "It is day zero. We're currently just consuming Daredevil content, not just the Netflix show but all the possible material. We're just making our stew of information nice and thick," he explained.
According to the original The Hollywood Reporter report, Marvel Studios is hoping to "rethink the original intention of the show," noting that there appeared to be quite a bit of difference between the upcoming Disney+ series and Netflix's darker, more violent take. One example offered in the article is that Corman & Ord's "Born Again" focuses heavily on the courtroom aspects – with sources adding that Cox' Murdock wouldn't be donning the Daredevil costume until the season's fourth episode. Corman & Ord will become executive producers on the series, and some scenes/episodes will be kept – but more "serialized" aspects will be added as the series shifts its creative focus.
