During the first week of the new year, I got to binge on the wonderful new Pokémon adaptation on Netflix, Pokémon Concierge. It is a fantastic little show that brings a new twist and a fresh feel to the franchise. The show is short and can be watched in one sitting. It is the type of show that will make you want to cozy up to a plushie under a blanket fort, comforting your inner child. It felt like a refreshing new take on the Pokémon world I cannot wait to see more loveable characters, beautiful visuals, and cute stories that encourage individuality as well as foster a sense of community.
The show is pretty short, and it breezes by as you watch with a very chill and relaxing vibe to it. I loved the slice-of-life feeling of Pokémon Concierge; the whole time, it made me wish I could be there taking care of Pokémon myself. And yes, I know they are not real, but the show really sucks you in. The characters are sweet, and it does feel like a show that would cater to multiple ages as well as new and old fans without having to rely on characters we are all familiar with from the get-go.
The stories are sweet, and I love the overarching dynamic that carries throughout between Haru and Psyduck, as well as their growing confidence in the outside world. It is very relatable from the main character's perspective, from making new friends and overcoming shyness to confidence and problem-solving, as well as outside problems and dealing with stress. Psyduck has always been one of my favorite Pokémon, so I was very happy he was our main. The storytelling is pretty straight to the point and reminded me of the short Pikachu's Vacation in Pokémon: The Movie back in 1998. It is one of my favorites and definitely carries that same feeling of a place where Pokémon can just enjoy and be themselves without threatening any of the other Pokémon guests. As a dog mom, it is something I would definitely do for my dog if I had the means.
Anyway, one of my favorite things about Pokémon Concierge was the animation style: it is not a style I would have imagined Pokémon in, but that definitely works for the franchise. It definitely brings forth the cuteness and cuddly side of all Pokémon. I feel like I never would have been able to pick a favorite Pokémon if we had seen them all like this. The story seamlessly blended into each episode, making it impossible to pause or look away until it was done, and – man! – I wish there had been more episodes. I hope we get to see and know more about each of the characters we came across and their Pokémon, as well as the guests in the Pokémon resort. Definitely worth the time and very enjoyable.
