Cleveland Browns Fire and Replace Sashi Brown in the Same Day

There has been a whirlwind of activity in Cleveland this week as the Browns owner Jimmy Haslam fired Vice president Sashi Brown, announced that head coach Hue Jackson would be back for 2018 and then hired Jim Dorsey as the new GM before the New York Giants could.

Breaking this down. On Thursday Haslam fired Brown, the teams Vice President of Football Operations and who had headed the personnel department for the last two years. Haslam said that Jackson would remain the head coach for the 2018 season but he felt they needed to strengthen their personnel department. The Browns are 0-12 this year and 1-27 with Brown/Jackson in control. The team immediately began searching for it's 9th general manager since the team rejoined the league in 1999. Former Kansas City Chiefs GM John Dorsey was considered the front runner at the time.

Though the team hasn't really had any level of success in a long time nor are the set up with lots of young talent… there's some, but not a lot… the team does have one thing going for it, six extra draft picks in 2018. The speculation is that they pulled the trigger now so they could start working on their strategy for the upcoming draft. The team has an extra first round pick, two extra second round, a fourth and a fifth plus an estimated $100 million in cap space going into the new season. Meaning the team will have the resources and opportunity to put a good team on the field if they take the time to plan it our right. And if they can convince players to go there, tough to do in a city that doesn't know winning.

Later that same day, Dorsey was hired. The ex-GM of the Chiefs, where he had a 43-21 record, was officially announced on Friday. Cleveland will not hire another Vice President, leaving the responsibilities to the new general manager. It is believed that the plan to make the moves had been in the works for a few weeks. Haslam might have waited until the end of the season except the Giants fired their general manger Jerry Reese and head coach Bob McAdoo and had Dorsey scheduled to fly out and meet with the team. Haslam hired Dorsey before he could go to the meeting. Dorsey signed a four-year contract the same day Brown was fired.

The Browns also interviewed at least one other candidate, former Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley for the position. This became known after rumblings began that the Browns hadn't interviewed any minority candidates for the job… a must for NFL teams under what is called the Rooney Rule. The Whaley interview satisfied that rule.

With Dorsey now unavailable, the top candidate for the Giants job is now believed to be for Carolina Panthers general manager Doug Gettleman who was fired just prior to training camp this season. Gettleman came from the Giants organization and the team is still high on him.
