"Star Wars Resistance" Season 2 Episode 2 "A Quick Salvage Run" Isn't Fast Enough [SPOILER REVIEW]
This week on The Disney Channel's Lucasfilm Animation series Star Wars Resistance, Kaz's (Christopher Sean) horrible decision making once again places the Colossus in danger. At the close of last week's Season 2 premier, "Into the Unknown," Kaz made a decision that continues to echo through the lives of everyone on the Colossus. Trying to do the right thing, Kaz actually puts everyone in more danger. In "A Quick Salvage Run," Kaz is racing against the clock and his own poor choices. While "A Quick Salvage Run" has better writing and a more complete plot than the season premier, Star Wars Resistance still struggles to find direction.
Proximity Alert: Spoilers ahead.
In the final moments of "Into the Unknown," Star Wars Resistance's Season 2 Premier, Kaz made the ridiculous decision to send Tam Ryvora (Suzie McGrath) a communication. Tam, the former friend who snitched on Kaz and Yeager's (Scott Lawrence) team to the First Order. The same Tam that is now a pilot trainee on a first order ship. Kaz really is the worst spy ever. Yes, the Star Wars universe has frequently ignored the need for secure communications. But come on! Even if Tam hadn't been busted by Rucklin (Elijah Wood) and forced to turn in her communicator, the transmission could still have been traced. And yes, the communication signal leads the First Order right to the Colossus.
After finding the destroyed Resistance base on D'Qar, the Colossus is marooned without any idea where to head next. Kaz gets the bright idea to raid the wrecked First Order Dreadnought for fuel – thank you Paige Tico (Veronica Ngo). After convincing the pirates to conduct the salvage run, Kaz, Neeku (Josh Brener), and the pirates head over to the Dreadnought. As Neeku is attempting to extract the hyperfuel, the First Order arrives and begins an attack on the Colossus. Neeku ends up saving the lives of everyone on the station.
In the beginning of the series, Neeku seemed like an attempt to recreate Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best). However, he has slowly become one of the few characters on Star Wars Resistance for whom the audience can cheer. While Neeku and Kaz are both complete screw-ups, at least Neeku admits it and embraces it. He doesn't pretend to be an expert spy or pilot, he just wants to be Neeku. His actions may fail, but his intent is always pure. Neeku may not adorn fan t-shirts for generations to come, but he has transformed into one of the most likeable characters on Resistance.
Tam ends up with a front row seat to the First Order attack on the Colossus. In the end, she does seem to express relief that the Colossus got away safely. But throughout the attack, she was able to maintain her composure. While not fully comfortable, it didn't break her heart to see her former home attacked. That's pretty cold; she has only been away from the Colossus for a few weeks at most! It is still unclear if writers want the audience to wish for Tam to have a change of heart. At this point, her character has not been developed enough for me to care about Tam, or her future.
The second episode of the season, "A Quick Salvage Run," is an improvement on the premier. However, as a whole, Star Wars Resistance still lacks a message and a purpose. Given that the show has a defined two season run, one would assume that the writers had a plan for the characters and the plot. But rather than a developed storyline, interwoven with the cinematic timeline, the show is more like a weather balloon, blown around by galactic events. If writers want to audience to care about these characters and their mission, they need to give viewers something to care about.
The next episode of Star Wars Resistance, "Live Fire," airs Sunday October 20 at 10PM on The Disney Channel.
