Season Two Of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. – Skye's Father, Ward's Redemption And The Writing On The Wall
I had the chance to sit down with the cast and producers of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. yesterday, and in true S.H.I.E.L.D. fashion, a lot of the questions put forth were met with cagey answers designed to keep a certain organization's secrets (by that, I mean ABC, of course). But I did a few glimpses into what might be coming out next, so check it out:
On what's next for S.H.I.E.L.D.:
Jeph Loeb (executive producer) : We left last season with Director Coulson having been given a directive, which is, rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D. Make it right. And so, one of the big questions for this season is, what will I become? What will they become? What is S.H.I.E.L.D.? What is the responsibility for each of these characters as they go along?….The fun part about what we can do with S.H.I.E.L.D. this season is to explore each of our characters now that you are invested in them. And that idea that we introduced last year, which is that you can't trust anyone, is something that will continue. And again, we don't know how far and how deep Hydra goes, and whether or not there's still more cards to turn over, because it's been so diabolical.
Clark Gregg (Phil Coulson): I'm not going to lie, it was kind of devastating to find out that Agent Ward has been Hydra all along, and that he murdered Victoria Hand, who Coulson was just finally forming a nice friendship with. To me, it's also what's exciting about the show. Nobody's safe, nothing's safe. All these allegiances built in an organization of secrecy, that has unfathomable power, just seemed like a ripe environment for betrayal. And given that we're in a world where people keep secrets, and you can't trust them, it only seemed right to have that kind of cross over with Winter Soldier, to have S.H.I.E.L.D. turn out to be riddled with evildoers, and then to have that be something that, Coulson now has to rebuild it, not sure who he can trust, when S.H.I.E.L.D. is an outlaw organization. I've got a lot to work with going forward this season.
On Skye and her father:
Maurissa Tancharoen (executive producer): You will know [Skye's father's] identity this season.
Will he be a character already established in the Marvel Universe?
Tancharoen: It might be. Very well might be.
Jed Whedon (executive producer): It would be cool if it was.
Chloe Bennet (Skye): This season's going to be a darker version of Skye. I think she went through a lot last season. She almost died. Her whole – Her new family that she's finally being a part of is ripped out from under her. This guy that she loves is a dick. And she's been training with May as her S.O., and I think she's going to bring it this year.
On Ward's potential for redemption:
Brett Dalton (Grant Ward): Yes, he's a murderer, but he's also the guy at the well –
Bennet: He's a Nazi murderer, but he's a great guy.
Dalton: He's also that scared kid at the well, who had a really messed up childhood and saw a way out with Agent Garrett, and he decided to take it. There's some really crazy things that he did along the way, questionable things, I should say, along the way, and that's made him who he is.
Bennet: I think it's going to take to be in a very – SHIELD to be in a very desperate situation for us to absolutely need his help, and for Ward to really put himself on the line, or risk his life, or do something heroic.
Dalton: I think, at the end of the day, he's done all that stuff, and he's a bad guy and he's a murderer, but he does love Skye very much…. And I think the reason why Skye's so upset is because she loves him.
On Coulson's wall scratchings:
Tancharoen: We're very aware that that is a question, and we will answer it.
Whedon: I think it's a fun question, the idea that the man put in charge of S.H.I.E.L.D. might have something a little bit wrong with him, so I think that that will play into the beginning of Season Two.
Gregg: Coulson, I'm not sure, knows about that. Those seemed to be semi-conscious or unconscious nocturnal ramblings, writ large. That's scary, especially because in the later episodes, Agent May explains that Director Fury tasked her with being by his side based on his warnings about all the subjects the alien blood were tried upon kind of lost their marbles, and became homicidal maniacs. So if he loses his marbles, she's there to put two in the back of his head. I hope those writings don't mean that's where it's going. I would like to think that means that he's got something going on inside of him that's going to aid in the process of rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D.
