'The Book Of Life' Is Getting A Sequel

The Book of LifeThe year is 2014 and a really good little animated movie called The Book of Life is released. It does pretty good overall and is well liked by audiences and critics alike. While it had one of the biggest opening weekends for an independent movie in the last decade no one talks about it much so save for a devoted but fairly low key fan base. The people that didn't forget were the ones making absolutely gorgeous cosplays and fanart that only highlighted how beautiful the movie was. When the trailer for Pixar's upcoming Coco were released people were quick to point out the similarities. This was the first time The Book of Life has gotten any mainstream attention but it seems that the voices were loud enough.

According to Variety and director Jorge R. Gutierrez a sequel is in the works. The movie will very much follow on from the style and tone that the original set. The movie was inspired by traditions of the 'Day of the Dead' and love and respect for the culture were present throughout the picture and will remain true for the sequel

"The sequel grew from that and people asking what was gonna happen with the characters, what's gonna happen with the gods? The sequel embraces all these things and, in a weird way, is a continuation of the story with everybody you love from the first movie. […] I am a big fan of romantic movies. I always want to find out what happens afterwards. That's one question we will ask during the sequel."

It appears that all of that beautiful art and elaborate cosplay was one of the reasons that we're getting this sequel.

"The movie exploded at comic book conventions. People dressed up as the characters, they get tattoos of the characters," Gutierrez recalled.

Gutierrez, his wife Sandra Equihua, and the art director for the original movie Paul Sullivan even designed a poster for The Book of Life 2 for a Sequel art exhibition for posters of hypothetical films. It went over really, really well.

"The fan reaction was insane. I had to keep explaining that it was for an art show," Gutierrez said.

We can see why fans went nuts for that poster because that is incredibly badass. Reel FX held off making an official announcement until the rights were settled but now that everything is ready they couldn't wait to announce the movie to the fans.

['The Book of Life 2" will be] "the continuation of an extraordinary story that technically and creatively captures the vision Jorge had of this fabulous world," said Chuck Peil, Reel FX head of business development and strategic partnerships. "The original film broke ground in so many ways and we hope that the sequel will have the same impact for the fanbase."

The first movie was really something special because it looked so different from everything else on the market. It'll be some time before the sequel comes out so perhaps that same style will still look unique. If this is a movie you didn't see back in 2014 it's absolutely worth tracking down now.

Summary: Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart, embarks on an adventure that spans three fantastic worlds where he must face his greatest fears.

The Book of Life, directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez, stars Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum, Ron Pearlman, and Christina Applegate.
