"Teen Titans GO! Vs. Teen Titans": Greg Cipes on Voicing Beast Boy; Wingman G Agrees [INTERVIEW]
Greg Cipes and Wingman G were on their way to the premiere of Teen Titans GO! Vs, Teen Titans when they stopped by to chat with Bleeding Cool at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 (SDCC). Cipes looked extra sharp in his custom sport coat featuring his long time partner in crime – the remarkably chill Wingman – as his traveling buddy peruses the table and says hello to a few of the journalists. Cipes is the one voice you hear when you think of our green, vegan, shape-shifter – and after so many years, we asked Cipes how he separates the different iterations of Beast Boy:
"All these different versions are based on based on different animal spirits that I channel for each variation. Like, the new Young Justice (Outsiders) Beast Boy I play is an older version of Beast Boy He's a different animal for that Beast Boy, The original Beast Boy is kind of like a dog, I feel like his energy and who he was. Teen Titans Go! is more like a Hyena, I use that energy. Wild and a little more careless even, like rabid. The new Beast Boy on Young Justice is kind of like a young lion."
Revisiting a version of Beast Boy that first hit the airwaves in 2003 had to stir up some fond memories of the Teen Titans original series:
"Probably working with all the great actors that came through. Some of them aren't around any more, they've moved on. Like Micheal Clarke Duncan ( Kral and Hayden -season 4 Teen Titans)….Glenn Shadix (The Brain and Monsieur Mallah- season 5 Teen Titans). Different and amazing actors, that's my favorite part."
Not many actors have played the same role as long as Cipes has. What's it like to play a character like that for as long as he has?
"I feel blessed. I feel like I say things, and we all have this power, and they become real. Our words are our spells. I feel like I wanted to be Mickey Mouse and I have my own version of Mickey Mouse now, which is Beast Boy. If I ever get to play Mickey Mouse, that'll be fun too."
Cipes continues,
"For me it's all about the animals and the opportunity for people to have love the character that I created since it began. It's an opportunity for me to share the message of "Peace, Love, and Animals" with everybody, and letting animals lead the way. So that's the most important thing to me. I think that's the greatest blessing of it is the opportunity to connect with people and to have your ears and eyes actually share things beyond Beast Boy."
In the following video, we also get a chance to cover a number of questions. Does OG Beast Boy learn anything from GO! Beast boy? What are Greg's Hope's for a Season 6 of GO!? How he wrote the "Waffles" song with Khary Payton? There's even a bit of him singing "The Waffle Song," people!
