Bringing Back nextwave: Agents Of H.A.T.E. (Avengers Spoilers)
nextwave: Agents Of H.A.T.E. was a wonderful Marvel comic book. The Hawkeye of its day (that day being 2006), from Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen, it abandoned Marvel continuity to tell a ridiculous story based around S.H.I.E.L.D. Vs Hydra blended with all sorts of silliness. It came to a close in 2007, reportedly, because it's sales were too low to justify the creators' exclusive Marvel contracts.
Starring Marvel D-listers Elsa Bloodstone, Monica Rambeau, Boom Boom, Machine Man and new character The Captain (formerly Captain ☠☠☠☠), the team was organised by H.A.T.E. a S.H.I.E.L.D. analogue, run by Dirk Anger, Nick Fury analogue, until they realised that it was all funder by the Beyond Corporation, the rebranded terrorist group S.I.L.E.N.T., so they rebel and fight against it – as well as Fin Gang Foom, Broccolli Men and the Mindless Ones.
Recently, the character Monica Rambeau returned to regular Marvel continuity as Spectrum but there have been occasional mentions of nextwave. It clearly couldn't have happened, but Monica still seems to think it did. From last year's Mighty Avengers #10…
Its closest publication today is Secret Avengers, which doesn't have baby MODOKs but does have goodguy MODOK and baby Furies instead. No soft toys turned into weapons of mass destruction though.
Captain America And The Mighty Avengers has been teasing that industrialist Jason Quintell is the Beyonder. Spoilers, he isn't. He is instead of the Beyond Corporation.
Warren Ellis told Jen Contino at Comicon.com that "I think it has to be a self contained universe. It takes from Marvel history, but I wouldn't necessarily want to drag mainstream Marvel into it for fear of what I would do to it."
Oops.
Writer Al Ewing is a big Warren Ellis admirer. And now he gets the chance to return to a very special comic book. Complete with skull asterisks…
This is how today's issue ends. The biggest spoilers, obviously. For ☠☠☠☠'s sake.
Back in the coat!
