Ch-Ch-Changes: Mark Evanier Will Write Garfield/Grumpy Cat Crossover, Not Jim Davis
Last week, BOOM! Studios announced the super-mega-crossover event to end all super-mega-crossover events: Grumpy Cat/Garfield! That's right, two of comics' most iconic feline characters will finally share a series this Summer, and comics will never be the same again!
The original press release said that Garfield creator Jim Davis would write the story:
An exclusive partnership between Dynamite Entertainment and BOOM! Studios' award-winning imprint, KaBOOM!, will bring Jim Davis' iconic comic strip cat Garfield together with internet sensation Grumpy Cat in a limited series, with a story written by Jim Davis himself!
However, BOOM! has sent out a corrected press release today, noting that Davis is not writing the series:
An exclusive partnership between Dynamite Entertainment and BOOM! Studios' award-winning imprint, KaBOOM!, will bring Jim Davis' iconic comic strip cat Garfield together with internet sensation Grumpy Cat in a limited series, with a story written by Mark Evanier!
Though Davis is still said to be enthusiastic about the book, according to BOOM! founder Ross Richie:
When I met with him at San Diego Comic-Con International this year to discuss this crossover, he was brimming with delight at the idea of these two felines getting together. His enthusiasm and affection for this crossover is infectious! This is going to be terrific fun!
While in many situations, the replacement of Jim Davis with someone else could be viewed as disappointing, Mark Evanier was the writer of the Garfield and Friends animated series, is co-writer of the current animated Garfield Show, and wrote BOOM's 2012 Garfield comic for 25 issues, so if anyone has the Garfield cred to match Davis, it's got to be Evanier.
Grumpy Cat vs. Garfield: Meow of Justice will be in stores this Summer. No artist has been announced yet, but we're gonna just say now that it's Rob Liefeld, and issue a correction when the actual solicit is released.
