Clean Room Will Make You Want To Sleep With The Lights On: Issue #2 Review
When I finished the first issue of Gail Simone's Clean Room, I nearly fell out of my chair. The captivating, heart-pounding script, and beautifully haunting artwork blew me away. This week brings the release of Clean Room #2, from Vertigo Comics, written by Gail Simone, with art by Jon Davis-Hunt. For those of you who don't know, the story follows Astrid Mueller, the enigmatic and compelling guru of a giant self-help organization. However, journalist Chloe Pierce has a problem with Astrid's ways due to the fact that her fiancé Philip blew his brains out after reading Astrid's books. Now Chloe is on a mission to find out who Astrid Mueller really is.
At the end of the first issue we are left wondering how their first interaction is going to play out, when Chloe finally gets to meet Astrid. Clean Room #2 allows us to experience their meeting in full force. I haven't been this scared of a character for a long time. Astrid is one of those characters that has this eerie presence about her, like a ticking time bomb waiting for something or someone to set her off. You can feel the confidence she has in what she does, and it seems to terrify Chloe as well.
The cool thing about this issue is we get to see what the Clean Room actually is, and what it's capable of. It would be far too much of a spoiler, to include a description here, but I will tell you that it turned out to be more than I ever expected it to be. As always, Gail Simone writes a fantastic script and is gradually laying in more details that make the world of Clean Room incredibly intriguing. To put it bluntly, Jon Davis-Hunt's artwork scares the shit out of me. There is no doubt in my mind, Clean Room will make you want to sleep with the lights on. I can't wait to see what happens next. Pick up the second issue to experience the intensity for yourself.
