Downloading a DRM-Free Digital Comic From Dynamite

AFV1CoverI thought I would try out downloading one of the DRM-Free digital comic books so I headed over to Dynamite Digital and scan through their 10 cent books. I realized that I had most of them and decided upon a $1.99 book instead… American Flagg #1.

The first thing I had to do is register as a member. When you go to register they ask you for your name, email address, age, gender and a password. Age and gender are optional fields. There is also a pre-checked option to receive the Dynamite emailer or special offers… I unchecked that. I then had to type in proof I wasn't a robot… which I would be very good at if I was a robot. I hit enter and did something wrong as it cleared all the fields and told me there was an error… it did not tell me what the error was. I started over and had success on the second try.

I found the comic I wanted, American Flagg #1, and hit "add to cart". It took me to my cart showing the comic had indeed been added. From here you have two options. You can remove the item from your cart and can go to checkout. There is top menu, but not specific button to return to shopping. I decided to check out. This took me to the checkout screen which wants you to add your billing address and then choose credit card or Paypal. I went with the Paypal route and got checked out pretty smoothly. When I came back from Paypal to Dynamite I found I had the option to download a PDF, a CBR or a CBZ file. I went with the PDF and hit download and it took me to a sign in for Dropbox. Now I use Dropbox and like it as it allows me to pass files between my multiple devices. But if you don't have Dropbox you'll need to sign up… it's free. From there I was able to copy from my Dropbox file onto my computer and read my comic.

Was this the smoothest system for buying a comic… not necessarily, but it's a start and with time they'll work the kinks out. Does it have it's advantages? Heck yeah… I've been reading Batman Eternal digitally every week and I don't think there has been a time that I haven't had to exit the comic and reopen it to get it to load some pages. Plus if my internet is down… no comics. With DRM-Free digital comics you get the file type you want and you get it on your computer. And with the fact that computers are now coming with 1TB hard drives… having your comic collection on your PC is a viable option.

This is again going through Dynamite's Digital Comic portal. Later in the week I will download a Valiant Comic using DriveThruComics.com.
