Extremity #7 Review: A Tale Of War And Redemption
Thea and Rollo escape from the Paznina, but are stranded in unknown and dangerous territory. They are wounded and running scared, and they are going to have to get home on foot.
The Paznina are hot on their trail, with their leader sending out her daughter to hunt down the escaping Roto. Scarred and incited against the Roto, she may prove a dangerous threat to Thea and Rollo.
Extremity provides and interesting take on the concept of long-warring civilizations enraged enough to hate one another. It tells the tale not through the common trend of taking off Romeo and Juliet, but through showing the struggle and hurt that the war can bring.
It's a "war is hell" story, but it shows the damage it can do through the eyes of youth like Thea. It's perspectives and details give Extremity individuality and personality.
A lot of its aesthetics and its focus on motherhood actually make it comparable to Horizon Zero Dawn, also known as one of the best games ever, which I love so much.
There is a lot to be said about the parental relationships here, especially between the Paznina leader and her daughter. She's loving, but her love is coupled with her genocidal hatred of the Roto. In this way, the love actually becomes dangerous, and it's an interesting character relationship to observe.
Thea is an especially likable character, determined and burdened with her own hatred of the Paznina.
The art is fantastic, with a detailed world and colors to match the atmosphere of it all. It's also stylized and unique. Overall, Extremity is a great-looking comic. I have a lot of respect for Daniel Warren Johnson for both writing and doing the art for this comic, and Mike Spicer supports him with his great color work.
With good art, compelling characters, and an allegory about how groups can become radicalized against one another, Extremity provides an engaging story of two peoples at war. It's a great comic, and it comes highly recommended.
