Find Sci-Fi Intensity In Southern Cross #2

I dare you to pick up the new issue of Southern Cross and not feel a rush of sci-fi intensity upon gazing at Andy Belanger's dynamite galactic illustrations. I was anxious to get back to Tanker Flight 73, after last months issue left me filled with curiosity. From Image Comics, written by Becky Cloonan, with art by Andy Belanger, Southern Cross #2 continues Alex Braith's mission to uncover the mystery of her sisters' sudden death. On top of that, she must deal with her roommate, Erin Mckenna's, disappearance which takes up more than half of her focus in this issue. While her main concern remains targeted at her sister, she can't shake the feeling that Erin going missing must be tended to.

Throughout the issue, I took notice of Cloonan's pacing of the plot. Everything seems pretty well balanced. Her integration of character background, and inner workings of the ship flowed naturally. I continue to enjoy Alex Braith's inner dialogue. It's my favorite way to be led through a comic because it connects you with the main character on a much deeper level. We are introduced to a few new characters mid-issue, but none of them really caught my attention. I always wonder and over-analyze the use of secondary characters when I read anything. If they are going to stick around and be devices to move the plot forward on a consistent level, then I'm happy. If they are randomly thrown in and we never see them again, well that's careless to me. Now, I'm not saying that Cloonan has done that or plans to, but there was one scene that left me feeling a little worried.

Andy Belanger's artwork is quite eye catching for me. The way he lays out panels breaking up specific scenes into smaller moments allows for so much more character emotion to be shown. Besides that, the overall spaceship design, and views you get glimpses of throughout the ships windows are incredibly well done. Overall, I agree with the comic book world as far as the hype surrounding this book. It's a hot item for good reasons. The end of this issue left me wide-eyed with a dropped jaw.
