Bleeding Cool has been reporting the increasing sales of Absolute Batman by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta to levels never considered possible for the title, alongside rises for the rest of the Absolute Universe and DC's whole DC All-In and Next Level line. But Absolute Batman seems a special case; Bleeding Cool reported on the title and line long before it was officially announced, and followed its sales numbers. When it was selling almost 200,000, then over 200,000, and now over 300,000, levels that the first issue of the series didn't reach with eleven printings. Obviously, it is a very well-reviewed book, and it has been perfectly positioned for people who first came to the likes of Dog Man eight or nine years ago and are now well into their teens, as well as the younger market fostered by the success of manga, and retailers have reported new, younger readers coming into their store for Absolute Batman. All this is true, and welcomed by everyone (okay, almost everyone).

But Scott Snyder mentioned something in his Substack which sent me down a rabbit hole, talking about Absolute Batman #19, hitting FOC today. He writes, "This one has the maximum amount of retailer variant covers. That means covers that are ordered by stores for their own shop with artists that they choose, not variant covers produced by DC. So we try and keep those really low. We try not to do a lot of variant covers on our own and just let you guys decide if you want to do variants, but this one has a really shocking number of them. So I was extremely excited to hear that there's that much interest and demand. But at the same time, I was really surprised that an eldritch horror monster as opposed to a sexy, tight-bearing superhero got that honor. But I'm glad for Scarecrow. He deserves it." How many? Fifty-three. Fifty-three exclusive retailer variant covers, from 7 Ate 9 Comics, 217 Exclusives, AU Pokemon & Collectibles, Big Time Collectibles, Clay Mann, East Coast Comics, Black Saber Comics, Felix Leon Art, Geeked Out Comics, Heavy Mental Comics, Jam Fortress Comics, Jiman Comics, Leapslair, Mark Brooks, Mark Spears, Midtown, Mike Mayhew, PCB Hobby, Pop Vulture Comics/Hive Comics, San lemon Comics, Scotts Collectibles, Sequential Art, Kirbys Comic Art, Third Eye Comics and Unknown Comics. Some are brick-and-mortar stores, some are online-only, some specialise in retailer-exclusive covers, and some are comic book creators who officially commission their own art for hot comics from the publisher, which they can sign and mark up. And most of them feature Absolute Scarecrow. I'll run the list below… but also the list for every issue of Absolute Batman so far. And it is a massive trend. Absolute Batman #1 had 33 such exclusive covers, but 6 of those were of subsequent printings, and another 6 were from comic conventions that DC was attending. And that was the launch issue.

Absolute Batman #2 had… none. Not a single one. Absolute Batman #3 had two: one for East Side Comics and another for MegaCon. Then, with Absolute Batman #4, we began to see the trend take hold, with 9 exclusive retailer covers from 5 stores. That was a bit of a blip, but from then on, there were a handful of covers from a handful of stores for every issue, until 12, when there were… none again. And then for Absolute Batman #13, there were 20 covers from 13 stores. Absolute Batman #14 was back down to just 4 from two stores, but people had realised the sales possibilities here. Retailers could get exclusive coverage, pay for it, and make a large profit on each sale, and demand wasn't slowing down; it was increasing. Absolute Batman #15 had 17 covers from 10 stores, Absolute Batman #16 has just five covers from three stores, and then Absolute Batman #17 had 28 covers from thirteen stores, Absolute Batman #18 had 44 covers from twenty stores, and now Absolute Batman #19 has 53 covers from 23 stores.

And this does impact sales and orders: usually a minimum of 3000 copies per cover, with variants at 2000 and 1000. Which means, for Absolute Batman #19, a conservative estimate for the sales added by retailer-exclusive deals works out to around 70,000 orders for the main 23 covers, and anywhere between 60,000 and 30,000 for the remaining covers. Split the difference, and we are looking at 140,000 copies added to the total print run for Absolute Batman #19 alone.

Absolute Batman is not the only comic to achieve such in this way. Bleeding Cool noted that at one San Diego Comic-Con, for the launch of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, one store had commissioned sixty-two exclusive retailer variant covers entirely for themselves, making up at least a fifth of the entire print run of 300,000 for one store. The difference here was that it was a launch issue. Absolute Batman is doing this issue after issue, and far from the market falling away over time, it is ramping up. Scott Snyder does seem to see a danger in such a thing getting out of hand, a boom before a bust, and says that DC are limiting the amount of retailer exclusives they are offering… but that seems to limit it to around fifty. Every month. And if the demand is there, well, Absolute Batman #20 features the first Robins, Absolute Batman #21 has Batman meeting Absolute Joker, and Absolute Batman #22 features the first Penguin and Two-Face.
