Madeleine Flores' Help Us! Great Warrior Is Comical, Light, And Clever

I never had the pleasure of viewing the popular webcomic from Madeleine Flores, so my first encounter with Great Warrior was this week. From BOOM! Box, an imprint of BOOM! Studios, comes a colorful comic entitled Help Us! Great Warrior #1, written and illustrated by Madeleine Flores, with colors by Trillian Gunn. The story focuses on main character, Great Warrior and her adventures protecting her village. This particular issue centers in on the demons that are currently causing trouble, and how Great Warrior deals with them. While the story begins in this epic fashion, we soon learn that she has her own way of dealing with things.

Right off the bat you know that you're in for a unique tale when you open up to the whimsical pages. Flores' script is comical, light, and clever. You immediately fall in love with Great Warrior's free spirit and the hidden strength beneath her calm exterior. Trillian Gunn's use of color is perfect with a nice mixture of light and dark vibrance throughout. I normally gravitate towards books that include quirky designed characters, and Help Us! Great Warrior certainly has a lot of that. It was a quick read for me, and I loved every moment of it. It's almost like eating a bag of potato chips…you just want to keep going! I'm happy with the way the plot is set up so far. At first I was wondering where things were going to go, but Flores' ends the issue on a cliffhanger sure to grab your attention and peak your curiosity. Be sure to pick up this fun title today!
