Planetes Will Be Returning To BookShelves Thanks To Dark Horse

Dark Horse is happy to announce that two-time recipient of the Seiun Award, Japan's highest honor for science fiction, Planetes, will be returning to bookshelves for the first time since 2005. Created by Makoto Yukimura, Planetes follows the space-garbage crew of aspiring explorer Hachimaki, mourning Yuri, and secretive Fee. It takes place during the 2070s, and focuses on the crisis-level amounts of space debris affecting interplanetary travel.

Planetes editor Brendan Wright spoke about the series by saying,

Planetes is one of the series that made me a manga fan, at once startlingly realistic in its scientific detail, moving in its relatable human drama, and hilarious in the personalities of its diverse cast of astronauts. I was saddened to think it might fade from American comics shops after Tokyopop's demise, so it's a joy and an honor to reintroduce it at Dark Horse in the edition I'd want as a fan, with superior source materials and all the color pages included.

It's always great news to hear that a series will be released to a new generation of fans. Dark Horse is making a smart move picking up Tokyopop's old titles. It makes me wonder what else they'll bring back. The cover art looks incredibly beautiful. I've moved away from reading manga over the past few years, but when I see titles like this re-surfacing I feel the urge to jump back in again. Planetes is collected in two omnibus editions from the original files, complete with bonus color pages.
