Spider-Man's Marriage Is Back At Marvel For Good

Sixteen years ago, Marvel Comics published Spider-Man One More Day by J. Michael Straczynski and Joe Quesada.

Sixteen years ago, Marvel Comics published One More Day by J. Michael Straczynski and Joe Quesada, one of the most controversial Spider-Man stories of all time. Concluding a storyline that started in that year's Civil War series with Spider-Man revealing his identity to the world, it saw Spider-Man trying to save Aunt May's life after she had been shot. Exhausting all other possibilities, Peter Parker chose to make a deal with the devil Mephisto to save her life. In return, he had to sacrifice the existence of his marriage to Mary Jane Watson. As part of the deal, the world's knowledge of Spider-Man being Peter Parker was also removed. and he also lost the possibility of their daughter, who appeared from the future.

The change was a result of Marvel Comics editorial and executives making the decision that Marvel needed a Spider-Man to be closer to other media portrayals of the character, to make him appear younger and to give him other storylines that would be closed to a married or even divorced Peter Parker. The dissolution of the Spider-Marriage generated outrage from many. Straczynski himself disowned the story and wanted to take his name off the final issues.

Since then, the longest-standing Spider-Man writer Dan Slott has stated that Marvel Comics would never reverse this storyline no matter what. Though a number of storylines have toyed with the idea, including Spider-Man/Deadpool, New York librarians, Dan Scott's  Renew Your Vows series for Secret Wars which then continued, the decision to bring Mary Jane Watson back into Peter Parker's life in a romantic fashion, and most recently even move in together – though that was then snatched away.

But now this has happened. A leak for Ultimate Spider-Man launching from Marvel comics in Spider-Man. "Meet The Parkers". With an older, bearded Peter Parker, Mary Jane Watson and… their kids. Two of the rugrats.

Jonathan Hickman Brings Back Spider-Man Marriage For Ultimate Universe

With these leaked promo pieces by Ryan Stegman and by Elizabeth Torque. The original Ultimate Spider-Man gave us a young Peter Parker and then a young Miles Morales. This Ultimate Spider-Man is giving us an older one. Mid-to-late thirties might we say? And by the looks of things, married.

Jonathan Hickman Brings Back Spider-Man Marriage For Ultimate Universe

Happily married, even. Jonathan Hickman did promise a "Peter B Parker "for the new Ultimate Spider-Man for 2024, drawn by Marco Checchetto. A reference to the older Peter Parker character who appears in the Spider-Verse movies. An older, worn-out Spider-Man, who had divorced Mary Jane after Aunt May had died. The Ultimate Invasion series had shown a world in which Peter Parker had never become Spider-Man after direct intervention from The Maker. Well, this one has been Spider-Man longer… and got busy.

And while the Amazing Spider-Man storyline will not give readers that story, no matter how many letters they write, it appears that the new Ultimate Spider-Man… will. Just stay away from Mephisto, you hear me? Now, any suggestions for the names of the kids? Would Benjamin and May be too on the nose now?
