AWA or Artists, Writers & Artisans Inc is a new comic book publisher from former Marvel publisher Bill Jemas and former EIC Axel Alonso that Bleeding Cool has been reporting on since long before anyone would officially admit that it existed. It will be launching a slate of new books and titles, with plenty of its A-List creators in attendance, at New York Comic Con – and we may have a sneak peek at one or two more of them.

Such as Grendel, Kentucky by Jeff McComsey and Tommy Lee Edwards – a supernatural cannabis farming horror comic…

For two generations, the rural hill town of Grendel, Kentucky has honored its Faustian bargain with the monster living in its abandoned coal mine: a human sacrifice every season in return for agrarian prosperity the likes of which this rocky region had never before seen (including its greatest cash crop: the dankest weed in the land). When one town elder breaks this pact, Grendel's only hope is that its prodigal daughter will return home to face down the creature of her nightmares—and bring her all-female biker gang with her.

Jeff McComsey is best known for graphic novel series American Terror published through Alterna Comics, the self-published work FUBAR and the Ultimate Night of Living Dead, Rise and Z-Men for Bill Jemas at Double Take Comics. Tommy Lee Edwards is best known for work for Marvel including Daredevil, The Question, Mother Panic and 1985, as well as Turf with Jonathan Ross.

Bill Jemas is CEO and publisher of Artists Writers & Artisans, Axel Alonso is editor-in-chief and the publisher is funded by James Murdoch of Lupa Systems, Jonathan Miller of TPG Capital, Alexander Taussag of Lightspeed Venture Partners. Based in New York City, AWA is looking to license its comics series and characters for movies, games, TV series, and other media ventures, offering authors a hybrid business model. The company offers 20% of the revenue from media licensing deals to creators and it has a Creative Council made up of Garth Ennis, Reginald Hudlin, J Michael Straczynski, Gregg Hurwitz, Margaret Stohl and Frank Cho.
