A New Mod Lets You Play Half-Life: Alyx Without VR

For those of you without a VR setup show ant to experience Half-Life: Alyx, there's a new mod out there that lets you play it normally. Valve Corporation released the highly-anticipated addition to the Half-Life saga last month, after years of people demanding we finally get a proper sequel to the game. We kind of got our wish as we got a new game, but it's a prequel of sorts, told from another character's perspective, and completely done in VR. Which, no disrespect to Valve, but we don't really recall anyone demanding it be a VR title. Which, as you might suspect, angered and upset a lot of people who don't own VR gear. Or people who didn't want to buy new gear just to play this one game they've been looking forward to for years. It was like Nintendo told you their next entry in The Legend of Zelda would only be playable if you hooked up to a new controller that only they make that's operated by waving your hands around in a jug of water. Why go to all that trouble over something everyone wants? (Also, apologizes if Nintendo makes that a thing.)

Now you can play Half-Life: Alyx without this awkward reminder you have no arms.

So for those out there who don't own VR and don't want to buy it but really want to play Half-Life: Alyx, there's a solution. Some clever hackers posted a mod on Github that allows you to access the game without having to buy a VR set. It essentially takes all of the controls that normally would have been tied to the headset and hand controls and dumps them into the keyboard and mouse for PC, as any other video game would be. It even comes with a guide that contains a list of controls so you're not guessing as to what action does what. It's basically your standard WASD setup with the weapons tied to specific keys and the actions put into the mouse. it will mess with your copy of the game, so be aware, you're basically breaking it in order to do this. But if you can't stand VR or don't own it and still want to play it, you have an option.
