Amy Hennig to Receive Life Achievement Award at GDC 2019

Every year at GDC, the organizers of the Game Developers Choice Awards give out a Lifetime Achievement Award to a developer who has helped shape the games industry as we know it. This year, the award show organizers have seen fit to honor writer and director Amy Hennig for her expertise as a digital artist, animator, game designer, writer, and director.

Hennig has been a fixture in the games industry for more than three decades, from the Atari 7800 up through the PlayStation 4. In recent years, Hennig has made a name for herself as the writer and director of acclaimed adventure titles with strong narrative and character elements. Hennig was the creative director and writer for Naughty Dog's Uncharted game series, and her contributions helped the series become one of the most acclaimed game series' in the modern era. Prior to her work at Naughty Dog, Hennig worked as writer and director on the Soul ReaverLegacy of Kain series at Crystal Dynamics.

Her writing has netted her countless accolades including the WGA Videogame Writing Awards and BAFTA, including a Special BAFTA Award in recognition to her contribution to the gaming industry.

"Amy Hennig is a powerful figure in the game world; her work exemplifies what good game narrative can be, with pathos, humor, suspense and energy. She is truly one of the most influential developers in the games industry," said Katie Stern, general manager of the Game Developers Conference. "These past accomplishments are just milestones in a career that we'll be following for years to come, but for one night at the GDCAs, we'll reflect on the hard work and artistry that makes game developers like Amy the heart of the industry."

Previous recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award recipients include Tim Schafer, Tim Sweeney, Shigeru Miyamoto, Warren Spector, John Carmack, Hironobu Sakaguchi, Hideo Kojima, Sid Meier, Ken Kutaragi, Dr. Ray MuzykaDr. Greg Zeschuk and Peter Molyneux.

Last year, the award show faced some serious pushback due to its decision to honor Atari founder Nolan Bushnell with the Pioneer award. The decision came under fire due to Bushnell's reported history of inappropriate sexual behavior.

The Game Developers Choice Awards ceremony takes place on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 6:30pm at the San Francisco Moscone Center during the 2019 Game Developers Conference, and in conjunction with the Independent Games Festival (IGF). The ceremonies are available to attend for all GDC 2019 pass-holders.
