"Contra" and "Bomberman" Board Games Licensed by Konami
In 2020, Blacklist Games and IDW Games will be looking to release board games based on the Contra and Bomberman franchises, respectively. These two franchises are owned and licensed by Konami Cross Media NY, and are based on video games. The release is geared towards North American crowds.
Contra is a run-and-gun arcade game released by Konami in 1987, detailing the futuristic adventures of commandos Bill Rizer and Lance Bean. Bomberman was released in 1983, with a North American release in 1987 for the NES. The first game in the franchise revolves around the eponymous Bomberman, a robot who attempts to leave his life of bomb-making in an underground complex. In doing so, he hopes to gain the ultimate reward: humanity.
"We're extremely excited with this opportunity to work with an iconic property like 'Contra,' and having Blacklist Games create an immersive board game that captures the essence of 'Contra''s action-packed experience," says Alex Kessler, founder and chief executive of Kess Co., involved with the development of the Contra game.
IDW, meanwhile, will be working on developing the Bomberman game, which is slated to release later this year, with more games on the way.
"Super Bomberman R's epic battling and colorful characters translate well into the multi-player board game we've envisioned," Jerry Bennington, vice president of new product development for IDW games is quoted as saying. "We hope fans will embrace the opportunity to discover that when the game debuts."
As this is a new story, very little is known of how the games will function or feature, but it is known that Contra will feature "tactical, card-driven gameplay", according to LicenseGlobal.com. On a similar beat, IDW has also received the rights to produce Bomberman merchandise, including pins, puzzles, and games beyond this board game. Bleeding Cool will cover more as more is revealed.
