From Screen To Console: A Quick Review Of 'The LEGO Ninjago Movie Video Game'
So let's get something out of the way when it comes to LEGO video games: you either love them or hate them. There's no middle ground, there are no "just okay" LEGO games these days. Either they're awesome and blow you away like the Star Wars titles, or they're redundant and kinda pointless like the Lord Of The Rings version. Sadly, The LEGO Ninjago Movie Video Game falls into the later. The game loosely follows the film that was released last month, in which you play as several ninja characters from the TV series, now brought to life in movie form.
Much like the film, the game was made for one kind of player: fans of the Ninjago series. Because of this, anything to make the game definitive or original from other LEGO game counterparts is lost. You have the basic set of aerobics, grappling, tunneling, targeting, and various other abilities to get around from level to level and advance the story, followed by the free-play mode when you unlock other characters and can go back to open up new areas and unlock secrets.
And that's it. I could sit here and write more about it, but the reality of the situation is that it is a LEGO game based on a film, and because of that, it suffers from a lack of originality to make it stand out. The majority of the score we're giving it is because it is a LEGO game and it is still fun to play, I just wish there was more here! And for full disclosure sake, my copy of the game came with fun items like a tote bag, a flash drive, a water bottle, playing cards, and a figure from the film. WB Games were excited for this game so much they wanted to share it!
If there were any other LEGO film, I'd be bought and sold on the idea, but I just couldn't get into it. Because everything about this felt so last minute. If you love the franchise, The LEGO Ninjago Movie Video Game is a perfect title for you. But you could easily pass on this one and not miss anything.
