Miyamoto Doesn't Consider Himself An Artist But Rather A Creator Of Products
Games being considered 'art', was at one point, quite a prominent topic of debate. At this point it's so overplayed, but the subtler parts of the discussion can rear its head from time to time.
That's why I find this quote from Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto quite interesting. Talking to Glixel, the Super Mario creator said he considers himself a designer over someone creating art work. When asked, he said:
I'm a designer. I don't think of myself as creating works, I really think of myself as creating products for people to enjoy. That's why I've always called my games products rather than works of art. It's not about coming up with an idea and trying to make that idea, the work of a planner is to work within the constraints of what you're given and make the best possible thing you can.
This is a really fascinating look into the mind of one of the most iconic game developers of all time. Of course, this will change from each game maker to the next, but interesting to see Miyamoto take such a hard stance, really showing his business mind. It sure has worked out for him this far.
