Sensory Bombardment: What It Was Like At The PlayStation E3 Media Showcase
It's been a few years since I attended E3 in person, and while the hype train feels the same, the production value has gone way up! Case in point is the PlayStation E3 Media Showcase, held at the Shrine Auditorium where Sony basically kicked everything into high gear and set the president for things to come over the next three days.
The event was a golden opportunity for the press to try out several games on PS4 consoles prior to the convention while being able to chow down on some bites and have a few drinks at a mixer beforehand. Out in the main ballroom, we were able to play titles like Far Cry 5, Matterfall, YS VIII, Ace Combat 7, Ni no Kunl II, and a wide selection of VR titles. In fact, a lot of this year's stuff was meant to highlight the VR capabilities of the PS4, including throwing drivers into a full car mount with VR gear on to race.
After the hobnobbing was done in the ballroom, we all made our way into the theatre where Sony essentially took every step they could to make the presentation feel like you were in the moment. Uncharted 4: Lost Legacy was treated with a live Indian performance backed by an orchestral track. Days Gone made you feel like you were really in a bad zombie-esq civilization.
The Shadow Of The Colossus gave you the impression of being in a vast open world. Spider-Man for PS4 put you right into a NYC with an awesome Spider-Man. But the one that basically killed all of our senses was Call Of Duty: WWII, with live fireworks and laser lights that made you feel like bullets were whizzing by your head and grenades going off in your face. I don't think there was a single person in the crowd without a ringing in their ears. (Except for those of us who listened to music loud years ago.)
Overall, it was an amazing showcase! Trying out all the VR titles for a brief moment in advance was an awesome experience, and I can't wait to try more of it as we make our way through the floors over the next few days. Sony definitely brought a lot to the PlayStation showcase and made sure they weren't just an afterthought to other designers or consoles.
