Team17 Showed Us "Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair" at E3
During our time at E3 2019, we got a chance to visit with Team17 and check out one of their new games on the way, Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair. The team basically guided us through the game's early stages as we learned that this is a rather unique platformer in the idea that you can go right to the end boss at the start. Seriously, if you're that skilled and think you can beat the game, the developers have allowed you to go right to the end. If you're not that confident, then the rest of the game is set up so that you can head around and collect bees to help protect you in the final areas while unlocking the world around you. The art and style to this game is super clever as the outer world is a top-down look kinda like Super Mario Bros. 3, but in a 3D perspective where you can change the landscape and unlock new areas you're already looking at.
But that's not all as they also afford you the ability to change how levels behave. In one part of the map there is an area where you can open up a waterway, flooding the levels below. When you go back in them, they're now water-based levels adding a whole new set of challenges and changes to the game. This is basically an indie developer's lesson in using all of your assets to their fullest potential. What little we played of the game was amazing and we look forward to seeing it on every console and PC. There's no formal release date yet for Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair, but we're guessing that we'll see one come PAX West.
