The Cards Of Pokémon TCG: Celestial Storm Part 25: Rainbow Rare GX

Bleeding Cool's journey through the Sun & Moon era of the Pokémon TCG continues. Now that our spotlight series has moved through the first seven sets of this block (Sun & Moon base, Guardians Rising, Burning Shadows, Crimson Invasion, Ultra Prism, Shining Legends, and Forbidden Light), now it's time to look at the next set from this era: Sun & Moon – Celestial Storm was released on August 3rd, 2018. This set has some interesting focuses including the expansion's mascot of the Dragon-type Rayquaza, the Hoenn Starters, and Kanto Pokémon. This set also continued the inclusion of Prism Star cards which could be pulled by lucky collectors in the reverse holo slot. Today, we continue our journey by moving to the Secret Rare portion of the set.

Sun & Moon – Celestial Storm included nine Rainbow Rare cards. It wouldn't be until the Sword & Shield era that Trainers began to get the Rainbow Rare treatment, so all of these cards are Pokémon-GX. All Rainbow Rares from this era use the same artwork as the Full Art versions with a rainbow color palette. That makes it so that this is more of an "if you like the Pokémon, you like the pull" kind of card. The sameyness of Rainbow Rares is also possibly part of the reason why Full Art Trainers often become the chase cards of Sun & Moon era sets, but note that some of these cards are valuable. Here's a quick look at current pricing:

  • Shiftry GX Rainbow Rare: $7.33
  • Blaziken GX Rainbow Rare: $18.39
  • Articuno GX Rainbow Rare: $22.29
  • Electrode GX Rainbow Rare: $9.34
  • Mr. Mime GX Rainbow Rare: $17.62
  • Banette GX Rainbow Rare: $10.47
  • Scizor GX Rainbow Rare: $28.20
  • Stakataka GX Rainbow Rare: $8.22
  • Rayquaza GX Rainbow Rare: $123.67

Rayquaza GX Rainbow Rare is the second biggest hit of Celestial Storm just under the Lisia Full Art Trainer Supporter, so stay tuned tomorrow for a full piece dedicated to the card.
