EA Says PUBG's Success Has The Battlefield Team "Looking at How They Innovate"
EA has made a link between its FPS games and the monster success of PUBG, leading many to wonder if we will see a riff on the Battle Royale genre in one of their upcoming games.
Battle Royale is everywhere right now. Teams are scrambling to see if they can find the right spin on the genre that will see the PUBG and Fortnite gold rub off on their titles. The success of those games cannot be overstated either. This really is a phenomenon, and the biggest games companies in the world will undoubtedly be thinking about ways to get in on it. One company who doesn't seem like an outlandish candidate is EA and with a new Battlefield coming out later this year, it certainly does set the mind wandering.
The company has acknowledged this now too, making for some interesting reading. During their latest investor call (via VG247), EA CEO Andrew Wilson acknowledged the success of PUBG Corp.'s title and said it's having some kind of influence on their current titles.
In terms of PUBG, I think what you discover in this industry is a lot of great vector that drive player engagement and one of those is just innovation in the core gameplay mechanic.
It's clearly a mode of play that the global FPS population is interested in and given that we have some of the best shooters in the marketplace, you might expect that we are also thinking about new and innovative ways to play.
However, he did mention that they aren't looking to just rip off the game and put it into Battlefield specifically, though he did add:
It does mean that our Battlefield team [are] looking at how they innovate in every aspect of the game including core gameplay and map design.
It's hard to know what to take from this. Clearly, EA is looking at the success of PUBG and want to incorporate what they can into its titles like Battlefield. Wilson did mention that at least in that franchise's case, we probably shouldn't expect a straight Battle Royale mode. This does tell me something is probably coming though, something new for Battlefield and that can't be bad (as long as its optional). Interesting.
