"I remember when I read in the news that Wonder Woman had been cast and my heart sank. I had been talking to the studio for so long about doing it and I was like well 'that's that.' I'm sure we wouldn't have made the same choice."
But of course after seeing her in action, Patty's opinion on the matter changed for the better.
Frankly, I think they did a better job than I could have because I don't know that I would have scoured the earth as hard to find her. I don't know that I would've looked internationally. I would have just looked for an American girl. The fact that they found Gal and chose her is a magical gift to me. They're incredibly intelligent people and they were looking for all the same things I would have looked for — all the values that Wonder Woman stands for exuding from someone in an honest way, and boy did they find it. She's the greatest."
Pretty high praise, and I'm glad to say it's completely warranted in this instance.
Gal stepped into the armored wedge heels admit vitriol of the internet backlash which seems to happen anytime a hero (or villain for that matter) is cast in a comic character role. She stood tiara to cowl with Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman, emerging as arguably the best part of BvS, whetting the appetite of Diana Prince fans the world over.
I would hate myself if I didn't mention the amazing young lady who played Diana as a child, Lilly Aspell steals the first few minutes of the film. From her wise-beyond-her-years gaze to her infectious rebellious charm, this young lady is going to be one hell of an actress if she continues with the craft. Aspell, along with Connie Nielson's Queen Hippolyta and Robin Wright's General Antiope introduce the Amazons as strong and wonderful for their first big screen appearance.
Gal of course has more time in Wonder Woman to bring Princess Diana of Themyscira life, more believably than Zeus ever thought possible. We experience her journey from naive and righteous into the hero of justice and wise love. Gadot against Chris Pine's Captain Steve Trevor is brilliant, believable, and engaging. This is a role that reminds audiences what we loved about Pine back in Star Trek 09, when he first sauntered onto the bridge of the Enterprise. I mean my favorite joke about Wonder Woman is "this movie is a reminder that Kirk shouldn't break the prime directive and visit non warp capable civilizations."
While maybe not Fury Road level of perfect in your face female fronted action, Wonder Woman has almost everything I was expecting and hoping for. Except for good villains. This seems to be a reoccurring problem with DC cinema in the modern area, they start out menacing but end up slightly less so by the resolution. I would argue that the animated 2009 Wonder Woman portrayed the battle between disgraced war god Ares and Diana better than the final few minutes of 2017's live action. Ares kinda sorta turns into Magneto? A bit? Doesn't he have his OWN set of abilities? (Yes, I know he does, I'm being facetious.) At one point, he wraps Diana in sheet metal, which crunches and collapses around her, sort of a metaphor for menstrual cramps, or so I joke now.
Are there things that could have been better? Of course, but not make-or-break things. There is a moment when Wonder Woman is lifting the tank to throw back at Ares where you can see the black elastic on the underside of her upper WW arm bracer, and it bothered me. So much time and effort put into making her hair curl the perfect way, and they couldn't cover that black square with a piece of worbla or something? Or how about the moment before she charges into the village and the stunt breastplate rubber is seen folding down where it's supposed to be metal? At least there weren't any moments like in Batman: Returns where the boot heels of Catwoman magically transform from stiletto heels into flat stunt boots. On the whole, two oopses do not ruin the rest of the great choices.
I will also say I wish we didn't know what Steve says to Diana when she's shell-deaf. It would be more heartbreaking if she never knew, but I also understand she needed to know for her God-dom abilities to manifest themselves for the end Snyder slugfest battle.
The best news about Wonder Woman is what it could mean for the future of superhero films fronted by women. If the Rotten Tomatoes rating is ANY kind of indicator, our Gal (ha, see what I did there?) is setting a precedent DC nor Marvel has yet hit. Bring on Captain Marvel.
