Austin Butler: Denis Villeneuve Is "One Of The Greatest Filmmakers"

The Bikeriders star Austin Butler says that Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve is "one of the greatest filmmakers alive."

A few films have been delayed because the studio decided that paying actors and writers to end the strike was too much to ask. One of the big films that moved from this month to March 2024 is Dune: Part Two. The first film was released during the hybrid release year at Warner Bros. when they released movies in theaters and HBO Max on the same day. People were concerned that Dune wouldn't do well enough due to the hybrid release to merit a sequel, and the film was quite clearly half a movie. However, Dune did numbers and came home with some Oscar gold. Now, the second film has been delayed due to the strikes, but some of the actors are out doing press for films, including Austin Butler. Butler is a newcomer to the cast and recently spoke about joining the cast and the process. However, during the Interview Magazine piece with his Dune: Part Two co-star Josh Brolin, Butler revealed that he believes director Denis Villeneuve is one of the best working right now.

"Denis is one of the greatest filmmakers alive, so the idea of getting to work with him, and then you [Brolin], and all of the cast was so exciting for me," Butler said. "The thing with Denis is, you'll give an idea, and then his mind will start to percolate, and then he'll come back with 10 more, and then you're feeding off of each other's imaginations."

Butler has had quite the rise in the last couple of years, garnering some awards considering for his portrayal of Elvis in the movie of the same name, and he's also getting some early praise for The Bikeriders, which did premiere at Telluride, which was recently pulled from the release schedule. Butler praising Villeneuve isn't surprising since everyone who has worked with him has had nothing but good things to say, which is always good. Dune: Part Two has been put into a weird place considering its new release date and whether or not it will get any awards consideration for 2025, but that is Warner Bros. Discovery and the other studio's fault for dragging the strikes out instead of just paying people livable wages.

Dune: Part Two – Summary, Cast List, Release Date

The saga continues as award-winning filmmaker Denis Villeneuve embarks on Dune: Part Two, the next chapter of Frank Herbert's celebrated novel Dune, with an expanded all-star international ensemble cast. The big-screen epic continues the adaptation of Frank Herbert's acclaimed bestseller Dune with returning and new stars, including Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet (Wonka, Call Me by Your Name), Zendaya (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Malcolm & Marie, Euphoria), Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning), Oscar nominee Josh Brolin (Avengers: End Game, Milk), Oscar nominee Austin Butler (Elvis, Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood), Oscar nominee Florence Pugh (Black Widow, Little Women), Dave Bautista (the Guardians of the Galaxy films, Thor: Love and Thunder), Oscar winner Christopher Walken (The Deer Hunter, Hairspray), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Fences, Lady Bird), Léa Seydoux (the James Bond franchise and Crimes of the Future), with Stellan Skarsgård (the Mamma Mia! films, Avengers: Age of Ultron), with Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling (45 Years, Assassin's Creed), and Oscar winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Being the Ricardos).

Dune: Part Two will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee. Dune: Part Two is slated for a March 15, 2024, worldwide release from Warner Bros. Pictures.
