Chris Claremont Compares X-Men: Dark Phoenix to Casino Royale

There are a couple of unknown quantities when it comes to the superhero movie this year, but one of the big ones is X-Men: Dark Phoenix. X-Men: Apocalypse was not exactly beloved by fans and critics, and the last the time they attempted to do this story, it fell apart spectacularly. It's a story that was told slowly in the comics, and to see them rushing toward the finish line for the second time in a row has fans worried that the famous storyline is going to appear on screen half-finished again. Screen Crush recently brought up the adaptation to Chris Claremont, who compared the multiple attempts to Casino Royale.

It's isn't like they didn't make more than one version of Casino Royale. … Well, I think that's a perfectly accurate paradigm; the second Dark Phoenix will have as powerful an impact on the comic-book film world as the second Casino Royale had on the James Bond film world. I figure you could do a whole lot worse than that.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix

Claremont doesn't seem to have much in the way of reservations. He believes in the crew, the cast, and that they could compete with the Avengers.

[Dark Phoenix director] Simon Kinberg has his heart in the right place. He's got the best ensemble cast of young faces I've seen in quite a while. My hope is it will give the Avengers a more than decent run for their money.

Whether Claremont means the "Avengers" as in "Marvel Movies" or specifically Avengers: Infinity War specifically is unknown. Either way, this movie has big shoes to fill. Let's hope it lives up to the hype.

Summary: Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn it into a Dark Phoenix. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all the people living in the world.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix, directed by Simon Kinberg, stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Sophie Turner, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult. It will be released on November 2nd.
