DC Super Hero Girls: Legends of Atlantis Review – A Clean, Fun Adventure [SDCC]

DC Super Hero Girls: Legends of Atlantis starts out with a flashback to Wonder Woman's (Grey Griffin) childhood on Themyscira. Diana is playing on the beach while, unbeknownst to her, a sea witch named Mera (Erica Lindbeck) is using the magical Book of Legends to open an underwater trench filled with evil sea monsters in order to take over Atlantis so Mera's little sister Siren has a safe place to live. Opening the trench causes a tsunami that washes Wonder Woman into the ocean, but not before she sees Siren use her water powers to attempt to control the deadly wave. As the evil sea monsters attempt to drag her into the trench, Wonder Woman kicks the Book of Legends into the trench, sealing it and the evil monsters inside. Queen Hippolyta then finds Diana wet and unconscious on the beach.

Years later, at Superhero High, Hawkgirl (Nika Futterman) shows the class a book she found on an archeological dig, and both Wonder Woman and Raven (Tara Strong) immediately identify it as the Book of Legends. Raven explains that they book could be very dangerous in the wrong hands. Wonder Woman, Supergirl (Anais Fairweather), Batgirl (Mae Whitman), and Bumblebee (Teala Dunn) all attempt to secure the book, asking Raven to protect it with magic. Raven's spell goes wrong, switching Batgirl and Supergirl's powers and alerting Mera and Siren to the book's location. The sea witches attack, steal back the book, and head off to fight Aquaman and steal his trident and his throne.

The Super Hero Girls (along with Beast Boy and the Flash) head off in Katana's (Stephanie Sheh) boat to catch the sea witches and save Atlantis, gaining an important and unexpected ally along the way. Bumblebee proves herself to be an amazing spy and a self-sacrificing friend, and Supergirl and Batgirl have to learn to control their new powers. Meanwhile, in a secondary plot line, Harley Quinn (Tara Strong) is trying to make friends with Raven and help her regain control of her powers after Raven's failed spell makes her lose confidence.

Will the Super Friends save the day? Will Supergirl and Batgirl gain appreciation for their powers? You can probably guess, but it's a fun journey anyway.

The Good

The Super Hero Girls have to learn to use their brains as well as their superpowers to save Metropolis and Atlantis. Wonder Woman has to overcome her fear of the evil sea monsters and her assumptions about the sea witches in order to lead the super friends to victory. And there are some really touching and supportive themes for young viewers about making new friends, listening to your feelings, accepting your feelings, and helping your friends even if you're scared.

The Not Great

There are a few funny jokes, but the dialogue is a little bit flat and most of the laughs come from slapstick type comedy rather than witty dialogue. The majority of the fights involve the evil sea monsters and can get a bit repetitive and long; however, there were a some clever moves in the final fight. Also, they spent a lot of time talking about the power switch between Supergirl and Batgirl without really doing much with it plot-wise.

The Bottom Line

A clean, fun, superhero-filled adventure perfect for elementary-aged children and engaging enough to keep parents interested. However, the dialogue and action are not quite sharp enough for the adults to enjoy it as much as the kids. Despite the issues, I plan to show it to my own children.

DC Super Hero Girls: Legends of Atlantis is released October 2nd on DVD and Digital.
