Grand Theft Auto V Has Sold Over 40 Million Units Worldwide
Grand Theft Auto V took the world by storm when it was released in September 2013. It made a billion dollars in sales after just 3 days on the market. That made the game the fastest to the mark in all of entertainment. Ever.
Well, the game has continued to sell exceptionally well too, and VGChartz have now updated the total number of games sold. The site claims that as of December 20th, Grand Theft Auto V had sold 40.46 million units. That makes it one of the highest selling games in video game history.
Now, there is a little bit of cheating going on here. VGChartz added the Grand Theft Auto V rerelease sales, which came out last year on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, to the total. The new-generation versions added several features, such as a first person mode and updated graphics so the question here is, is Grand Theft Auto V rerelease on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 the same game as Grand Theft Auto V on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3? Should their total sales be added together? I think there is an argument to be had on both sides.
Regardless of that, the PlayStation 3 did account for nearly half of the sales with 19.24 units sold there. The Xbox 360 moved 17.79 million, the PlayStation 4 has sold 4.73 million and the Xbox One tapped out at 1.81 million copies.
The PC version hasn't even launched yet and nor has the severely delayed Heist Missions, so this number will certainly grow in the future. Just like I mentioned with Minecraft yesterday, we may well be looking at 'best selling game ever' territory here.
