"Lethal Weapon 5" Producer Dan Lin: Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Richard Donner Returning, Awaiting Script

In discussing revisiting franchises, it matters not "if" Hollywood revisits rather "when." Dan Lin (Two Popes) revealed the development of a fifth Lethal Weapon film with original stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover returning to star along with director Richard Donner during a Producers Roundtable for The Hollywood Reporter.

"We're trying to make the last Lethal Weapon movie. And Dick Donner's coming back. The original cast is coming back. And it's just amazing. The story itself is very personal to him. Mel and Danny are ready to go, so it's about the script."

Joining Lin was Charlize Theron (Bombshell), David Heyman (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Emma Tillinger Koskoff (Joker, The Irishman), Debra Martin Chase (Harriet), and Peter Chernin (Ford v Ferrari).

The buddy cop franchise began with the 1987 original Lethal Weapon created and written by Shane Black. The film's success spawned sequels in 1989, 1992, and 1998. The trio remained throughout adding the likes of Rene Russo, Chris Rock and Joe Pesci in the later films. The franchise grossed a combined $952 million globally at the box office. The highest-grossing film was Lethal Weapon 3 (1992) with a global take of $319.7 million.

The 73-year old Glover has multiple projects underway including Locke & Key for Hulu and the indie comedy Killing Winston Jones. He was recently in Jumanji: The Next Level for Sony, The Dead Don't Die for Focus Features, indie film Strive, The Last Black Man in San Francisco for A24.

The 64-year old Gibson will be in Boss Level for Entertainment Studios, Force of Nature for Blue Box International, and Waldo for IMR International. He was recently in The Professor and the Madman for Vertical Entertainment.

The 90-year old Donner largely remained inactive directing since 2006. His last couple of projects he produced were in 2009 and 2012. In recent years, he was interviewed for multiple documentaries.

I can't say I'm surprised by the development with the television series' cancellation. We're also seeing the 77-year old Harrison Ford still appearing in Star Wars and about to make a fifth Indiana Jones.

I'm getting too old for this s***.
