Naughty Dog Might Not Make Sacrifices To Reach 60fps In Uncharted 4
60 frames per second is something most studios strive for nowadays. When the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 first came out, Sony's console was the better at achieving the threshold. It was a serious point of contention in the 'console wars'. For the most part though, that has somewhat evened out a little more as developers get more familiar with Microsoft's console.
That context makes this next story interesting. Uncharted 4, the biggest tentpole game for PlayStation 4 so far, may not reach 60fps if the circumstances aren't right. Talking in the latest Edge Magazine, (via VideoGamer) the game's director, Bruce Straley, stated that 60fps wasn't the first priority. He revealed the demo showed at PlayStation Experience was capped at 30 fps for technical reasons but reassures us it is now running above that. He then explained the design philosophy according to frame rates:
We're going to do whatever it takes to make the game we want to make. If it means we could go for 60 but lose something that would really impact the player's experience, then it's our choice as developers to say, 'Well, we're going to go for the experience [instead of] the 60 frames.'
For what it is worth, it's incredibly unlikely Naughty Dog will put out the game at anything much lower than 60fps. They're one of the best technical wizards in the industry and are at home on the PlayStation architecture.
What is most interesting though is the sentiment. This is the absolute right stance to take on frame rate. It's a nice target, but it's not the be all and end all of a game's success or beauty. If Naughty Dog want to pack a ton of high fidelity graphics on screen at once, they should do that as long as play stays stable.
