The Supernatural Cast Talks Series Crossovers And Season 13 At NYCC

Still going strong into its thirteenth season, Supernatural is one of the longest running shows out there. It has stood the test of time and with each year more and more fans flock to the incredibly successful show. While its basic story is that of two brothers who fight monsters, it has become over time less about the monsters and more about emotions and two siblings. Supernatural appeals to nearly every demographic out there; it has something for everyone.

Season thirteen just started and it wouldn't be surprising if we got a fourteenth season. Anyway, you, the person who's reading this, wants to know what Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins and the show's producers had to stay about what to expect in the coming season. Well, here we go!

Note: Spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen the season thirteen's first episode.

We first spoke to Ackles about where Dean is emotionally as the season begins with his mom and Castiel gone and what the relationship between the two brothers will be like.

The season picks up from the moment we left off. Dean basically does what he knows what to do and that is take care of the threat and in his mind the threat is the Luicfer's love child that is inside the house. He doesn't know hoe to react or to process what took place. That turns out to be more difficult than expect because Sam stops him and tells him to think about this. That's the struggle of the first couple of episodes. It's one of those things where it's almost too much for him, so he pushes it away.

This season isn't brother against brother; we're on the same page but we have different ideas on how to do things. We're going to get to the same point, but from different angles.

With Misha Collins, when last we saw Castiel, he was stone dead. Yet the actor teased Castiel's eventual return, but stated the angel was going to be "dead for longer than you would expect. It would be great to play a Castiel from the other dimension who has no moral compass. We haven't gotten to those stories yet, but I assume we are going to play with that because it's such a cool playground.

In talking to the producers and showrunners of Supernatural we started with the theme of the new season, going on to discuss potential crossovers.

If the last season was about bringing family together and Sam and Dean really in lockstep, this season starts off really the family torn apart and how they deal with that. There's a new element to the family, Jack, Lucifer's kid, who if Dean is the taskmaster Dad, Sam is more mom. The season is a little more intimate and more character-driven; lots of emotion.

There was some follow-up on something Collins had said in relation to having interest in playing an alternate world Castiel, as they said,

We'll be in the Real World more than the Apocalyptic World. If Sam and Dead could get through to the Apocalyptic world fast, then we're not playing as much story as we should. But we'll be visiting there and we'll see different versions of characters we know.

While they did discuss the upcoming Scooby-Doo crossover in episode 16, it was interesting to hear what they had to say about a potential crossover with Arrow, a pairing many fans have expressed interest in seeing:

It would be awesome. I think Sam and Dean in an episode of Wacky Races would be great. I think bringing another show…there's always a way to do it and there's always a way to make it happen. I think there are certain shows that organically crossover with Supernatural and there are other shows where if Supernatural crossed over with the Vampire Diaries, they'd just kill everybody. Introducing superheroes into the world of Sam and Dean is very difficult, but I know there's a way to do it. It's hard to pull off, but there are ways to make things like that happen. Luckily, in a world of alternate universes, you never know!

Lastly, we spoke to Padalecki on whether he thought there are still more facets of Sam to explore and what to expect for his character throughout the season.

I absolutely think there are more facets to Sam. Just going into my personal life, what I've learned from going to therapy is that things don't go away, they ebb and flow. This season is the first time we really see Sam, again, deal with his destiny; he had demon blood in him when he was a year old. He was supposed to be bad, but through love and nurture, he found a way to be good.  

He makes mistakes, but he's trying to be good. Sam is now saying the same thing about Jack. Dean is saying that's he's half demon and should die, while Sam is saying he's half human, let's nurture him. Sam has started to see himself in Jack a little bit, which I'm really excited about. It's almost like how for so many years Sam didn't explore his power. When he did explore his power, he started the Apocalypse and he doesn't like where he goes when he's that powerful. I'm excited to explore that because it'll be different for Sam to go through that now, at his current age, then when he was younger. The possibility of those powers is still there and there's the chance that Jack might bring them out.
