Matt Reeves on Chance of a Robin Appearance in Future Batman Films
The Batman hasn't even been out for a full week, but constant discussions regarding sequels, spin-offs, and more are already taking place in true superhero franchise fashion.
After nearly earning enough to cover the film's hefty price tag (excluding marketing costs), the immediate $250 million success of the Matt Reeves film seemed to set the stage for a much bigger picture. Though there had been announcements confirming upcoming spin-offs like the now-canceled GCPD series, it appears that gears have shifted to villain-centric titles and the potential to expand The Batman into a trilogy.
As always, there's a fairly large audience that hopes to see an expansion of sorts for the extended Bat-family characters in the stories to come — and one constant name that people bring up is the boy wonder, Batman's reliable sidekick Robin. When promoting the new film, the subject came up, and Reeves played coy but did suggest it is in the realm of possibilities at the very least.
When discussing the chance of seeing Robin in a future Batman film on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Reeves explained, "Maybe. We'll just say maybe. I don't know. Here's the thing, I have a lot of ideas about what I want to do. I'm not sure what the next story is. For me, whatever that story's going to be, it's going to be to take these characters — and specifically Batman's character — and put them in some kind of emotional jeopardy. So when you talk about what you're talking about, there may be a really interesting story. There'd have to be emotional stakes to get drawn into that character's story."
The Batman stars Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse) as the timeless hero; featuring an all-star cast of Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies) as Catwoman, Paul Dano (12 Years a Slave), Colin Farrell (True Detective), Jeffrey Wright (No Time to Die), John Turturro (the Transformers franchise), Peter Sarsgaard (The Magnificent Seven), Jayme Lawson (Farewell Amor), and Andy Serkis (Black Panther).
